On the investigator panel for two international inflammatory bowel disease trials
A/Prof Kariyawasam represented Macquarie University Hospital at the international investigator meeting for the AMETRINE and SIBERITE studies in Singapore, on a panel about recruiting and running the trials well.

A/Prof Kariyawasam went to Singapore for the Asia Pacific investigator meeting of the AMETRINE and SIBERITE studies, global trials in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease sponsored by Roche. The meeting ran over two days, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May 2025. He is a sub-investigator at the Macquarie University Hospital site.
On the first day he joined the panel on recruitment and study execution with Prof Jakob Begun, principal investigator at Mater in Brisbane, and Esther Lee, the gastroenterology research nurse at Macquarie University Hospital. Investigators from India, China, Malaysia and Taiwan took part, along with the other Australian sites.

Why the trials matter
Both studies are testing a therapy aimed at a target called TL1A, which is a different mechanism from the treatments now in use for inflammatory bowel disease. Work of this kind is how the options available to patients are added to over time, and running the trials well at each site is part of that.
The treatments under study are investigational. They have not been approved for use in Australia and are available only within the trials themselves. Questions about clinical trials are best raised with your own treating team.
